* In Mercedes‑EQ models, socket size may vary by wheel type; verify before installation.
ⓘ Table note: The specified torque (Nm) is the maximum safe value determined by the manufacturer and must only be applied with a torque wrench. Pneumatic/cordless impact tools produce much higher torque; final tightening must never be done with impact tools.
⚠️ Potential Issues from Over-Tightening
- Permanent elongation of wheel bolt (plastic deformation)
- Metal fatigue and risk of future breakage
- Thread stripping or damage
- Deformation of wheel seating surface
- Brake disc warping (vibration issues)
- Bolt breakage or stud spinning out
🚗 Heavy battery electric vehicles (high axle load) put more stress on wheel bolt systems. Correct torque is therefore even more critical.
🔧 Service Selection
- Choose services that use torque wrenches.
- Always ask for the applied Nm value after service.
- Avoid shops that only use impact wrenches for final tightening.
- Hand-threading: Turn bolts by hand a few turns first to prevent cross-threading.
Using a torque wrench is not a detail, but a necessity for driving safety and mechanical integrity.
Standard lug wrenches, torque multipliers, or pneumatic/cordless tools can increase applied force but do not indicate how many Nm are being applied. For that, adjustable torque wrenches (click-type or digital) are used.
Example Calculation
175 Nm torque means applying approximately 59 kg of force at the end of a 30 cm torque wrench.
With adjustable torque wrenches, this value can be applied precisely and controlled.
